Andrew R. Jassy ( Scarsdale , January 13, 1968)  is an American businessman and CEO of Amazon , serving as successor to the company’s founder, Jeff Bezos , since July 2021.

Jassy is also one of the minority owners of the Seattle Kraken of the National Hockey League , and the president of Rainier Prep, a charter school in Seattle . 


Jassy is the son of Margery and Everett L. Jassy of Scarsdale, New York .  He is a Jew of Hungarian descent.  His father was a senior partner at the New York corporate law firm Dewey Ballantine and chairman of the firm’s management committee. 5 Jassy grew up in Scarsdale and attended Scarsdale High School.


He worked as a project manager for a collectibles company called MBI. Then, together with a colleague from MBI, he started a company and they closed it down.

He joined Amazon in 1997, with several other Harvard colleagues. His early positions included marketing manager. In 2003, he and Jeff Bezos came up with the idea to create the cloud computing platform that would later be known as Amazon Web Services (AWS), launching in 2006. Jassy led AWS and its team of 57 people. In April 2016, he was promoted from Senior Vice President to CEO of AWS.

In 2016, Jassy earned $36.6 million. In 2020, for his work as CEO of AWS, he earned compensation of $175,000, plus an award of 4,023 shares (worth $12,104,844.93 as of July 26, 2020)  of Amazon with consolidation from 2023. He also received an award in April 2018 for 10,000 shares (worth $30,089,100 as of July 26, 2020), 17 vesting 37.5% in 2021, 12.5% ​​in 2022, 37.5% in 2023, and 12.5% ​​in 2024.

In April 2017, Jassy criticized rival company Oracle , claiming that it “has been a lonely place for customers” due to its high prices and vendor reliance .

On February 2, 2021, it was announced that Jassy would replace Jeff Bezos as Amazon CEO sometime in the third quarter of 2021, with Bezos becoming CEO.  Finally, the transfer of office took place on July 5, 2021.

Personal life 

In 1997, Jassy married Elana Rochelle Caplan, a fashion designer for the Eddie Bauer Company.  Their wedding was officiated by Rabbi James Brandt of New York, Elana’s cousin.  Both parents were senior partners in the Dewey Ballantine law firm. ​ They have two children.

They live in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood, in a 1,000-square-foot home purchased in 2009 for $3.1 million. In October 2020, Jassy bought a $6.7 million, 5,500-square-foot home in Santa Monica , California .
